Civics Update for week of January 15-19

We will be returning from a long holiday weekend.  We will be celebrating the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on Monday.

When we return, we will be studying the judicial system.  For the most part, it will be about the federal judicial system, but remember that the state has their own judicial system.

Here is the schedule for the week:

Monday:  No School

Tuesday:

  • Current Events due - second half of the alphabet.
  • Chapter 8 Vocabulary will be checked.  You must use the textbook definitions.
  • PIPS Quiz.  You can study the terms using the PowerPoint on OneDrive or use Quizlet.  Remember, you must enable access on Quizlet.  
  • Read pages 220 to 222 for Tuesday.  We will complete notes about the structure of the American court system.  
  • Read pages 223 to 226 for Wednesday.


Wednesday:

  • We will be looking at characteristics of what would make a good supreme court justice
  • Essential Question notes 8-2
  • Read pages 227-232 for Thursday.


Thursday:

  • Complete Essential Question Notes 8-3:  How are lower federal courts structured?
  • Read pages 233-237 for Friday.  There will be a reading quiz (see Friday).


Friday:

  • Reading quiz for pages 233-237.  Here are the possible questions:
    • Who was the author of the influential papers that provided the lengthy explanation of the federal judiciary and the procedures of the Supreme Court?
    • Who was Cheif Justice for 34 years and was very influential in the decisions of the early Court?
    • How did the 1857 case Dredd v. Sandford becoming a contributing factor to the Civil War?
  • We will watch a video on the powers of the Supreme Court.
  • Read pages 238-242 for Monday.
