Civics Update for January 22-26

***Those who hade been given a missing assignments list on Friday need to turn in assignments on Monday.

***Current Events (GP 4, CE#2)  for the second half of the alphabet is due on Monday.

Much of the material to be covered this week was on last weeks post.  We will have Total Recall questions for the first time this week.

Here is the agenda for the week:

Monday:

  • We will review the qualifications to be justice or judge in the federal court system.
  • We will watch a short portion of a video from Constitution Day several years ago about how Judge Keeley was nominated to be Federal District Court Judge.  
  • Students will complete an activity to define what are specific qualities for judges/justices.
  • Read pages 227 to 232 for Tuesday.


Tuesday:

  • We will look at the organization of the lower federal courts in EQ Notes 8-3.  
  • The classes will view websites on the federal judicial system.  These sites will be instrumental in completing activities in the next week.  
  • Read pages 233 to 237 for Reading Quiz on Wednesday/Thursday.  


Wednesday:

  • Periods 1, 3, and 4 will have flip-flop activities with periods 6 and 8 Wednesday and Thursday.
  • Here is what is planned for periods 1, 3, and 4:
    • We will work with class iPads and students will complete activity on researching a Supreme Court Justice
  • Here is what is planned for periods 6 and 8:
    • Reading quiz for pages 233 to 237.  Here are the specific questions:
      • Who was the author of the influential papers that provided the lengthy explanation of the federal judiciary and the procedures of the Supreme Court? 
      • Who was Cheif Justice for 34 years and was very influential in the decisions of the early Court?
      • How did the 1857 case Dredd v. Sandford becoming a contributing factor to the Civil War?

  • We will watch a video on the Supreme Court and you will be taking notes on that video.
  • Completion of 8-4 notes on the Supreme Court.  

Thursday:

  • Here is what is planned for periods 1, 3, and 4.  


    • Reading quiz for pages 233 to 237.  Here are the specific questions:

In case you missed it from a previous post:
If you are interested in up to 50 extra credit points, you can watch a movie The Post to be shown in local theaters starting January 12.  You will need to turn in the ticket stub and write a one-page hand-written review about the background of the story, the results of the movie, and what kind of implications it has for government and politics in America's society today.  You will need to turn this in by February 1st.
